چکیده

In a previous paper (Hilton & Yi 1992), a systematic study was undertaken to determine how shapes of relaxation–time functions affect damping characteristics of isotropic viscoelastic materials. The significant parameters were the instantaneous and fully relaxed moduli (Regions A and E on Fig. 1), the two “knees” (B and D), the central slope (C) and anisotropic shift functions. The sensitivity of these parameters is not of equal strength in their effect on material damping characteristics. In the fully anisotropic case with its 21 relaxation functions, 147 distinct parameters of the above type can be identified as well as their many combinations. In the present pilot demonstration study an inverse approach to parametric sensitivity is adopted. It consists of systematically examining such sensitivities on a one-on-one “what if” basis in order to categorize influences of relaxation modulus shapes and parameters on stored and dissipated energies and on material responses under various loading conditions. This protocol of numerical simulations is used on analytically generated

Bending of Viscoelastic Beams under Piezoelectric Control – Analytical and Massively Parallel Computational Simulations

2. INTRODUCTION Piezoelectric effects are of increasing importance in the control and sensing of structural element deflections. Elastic piezoelectric theory has been extensively developed (Leibowitz & Vinson 1993). Hilton et al. (1997) have presented an extended bibliography and discussed past contributions as well as formulated an analytical nonlinear theory of anisotropic piezoelectric-therm...

A Survey on Buckling and Vibrations of a Viscoelastic Beam under Distributed Lateral and Axial Loads

In this paper, based on Kelvin and Linear Standard Solid models, dynamic response and the buckling load of a viscoelastic beam under  lateral and axial loads have been determined. The governing equations have been extracted using Euler  and Timoshenko theories and their analytical solutions have been obtained by using the eigenfunctions expansion method. Buckling load have been calculated by us...

A Combined Honeycomb and Solid Viscoelastic Material for Structural Damping Applications (2001-2002)

The goal of the research described in this paper is to investigate the feasibility of a new combined polymer composite damping system, which consists of a polymer honeycomb material and a viscoelastic solid material. This new combined viscoelastic system, which is intended primarily for energy dissipation and vibration control, serves as an interface layer within lightweight composite panels su...

Concerning the Effect of a Viscoelastic Foundation on the Dynamic Stability of a Pipeline System Conveying an Incompressible Fluid

In this paper, we present an analytical method for solving a well-posed boundary value problem of mathematical physics governing the vibration characteristics of an internal flow propelled fluid-structure interaction where the pipeline segment is idealized as an elastic hollow beam conveying an incompressible fluid on a viscoelastic foundation. The effect of Coriolis and damping forces on the o...

Mircea Calomfirescu Lamb Waves for Structural Health Monitoring in Viscoelastic Composite Materials

Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) is a novel philosophy for an autonomous, built-in nondestructive evaluation of structural “health” on demand to reduce life-cycle costs, increase safety and reduce structural weight. This dissertation investigates ultrasonic guided waves, particularly Lamb waves, and their propagation properties as a method to perform Health Monitoring of viscoelastic composit...
